STATUS:Full Time 80 Hours

SHIFT: Variable

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Summary:
Performs mandatory processes, operational checks, and cleans reusable equipment. Technicians are accountable for all Sterile Processing activities which include, but not limited to: quality and accuracy of instrument decontamination, disassembly, assembly, sterilization, and case cart assembly. Technicians will retrieve used trays, instruments, and equipment from various locations throughout the hospital, and return items for processing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Transports and decontaminates reusable instruments and equipment used for patient care.
2. Disassemble, decontaminate, and prepare instruments for further processing.
3. Accurately assembles basic instrument sets and procedure trays. Inspects and wraps all instruments with internal indicator, lock and filters.
4. Operate and maintain: washer/decontaminator, steam spray gun, ultrasonic machine, sterilizers, heat sealers, and other equipment and machinery required to complete a process.
5. Package supplies according to specifications and appropriate methods of sterilization.
6. . Practice preventative maintenance on all instruments and patient care equipment by understanding and applying the principles of electrical and mechanical safety, and working with the bio-medical engineer to ensure equipment is safe and functioning properly.
7. Under supervision, perform quality control on all sterilizers (i.e., biological, chemical, and mechanical monitoring) according to standards set by The Joint Commission, AORN, and AAMI.
8. . Dispense sterile supplies to the appropriate locations (i.e., Sterile Storage, OR, ER, LR, etc..
9. May provide guidance and act as mentor to others as assigned to them.
10. May assist with maintaining departmental policies, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, environmental, and infection prevention standards.
11. Rotate trays and sets to assure proper sterility guidelines are followed.
12. Maintain accurate instrument count sheet(s) of all surgical sets to be assembled.
13. Inform supervisor of any discrepancies.
14. Participate in the daily cleaning of the department. Maintain an orderly and clean Decontamination and Preparation & Packing areas.
15. Meet and maintain required productivity expectations.
16. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION AND CREDENTIAL:

  • Education High School Diploma or GED
  • Credential CRCST within 12 months of hire, if not already obtained

EXPERIENCE:

Preferred: 1 year of Sterile Processing experience and can assist in mentoring new staff.
